Offered here is an exceptionally well-preserved Belgian Browning Double Automatic Standard, serial number C7462, chambered in 12 gauge for 2 3/4-inch shells. The serial number and steel-receiver configuration have been confirmed directly with Browning. Designed by Val A. Browning, son of John Moses Browning, the Double Automatic is one of the most distinctive and innovative sporting shotguns produced by Fabrique Nationale. Rather than relying on a conventional tubular magazine, the Double Automatic uses a compact two-shot receiver-fed system. With the bolt locked open, the first shell is inserted through the left-side loading port and automatically chambered. A second shell is then placed on the carrier, producing a remarkably fast loading sequence while maintaining the clean lines and balance of a traditional sporting shotgun. This example is the steel-receiver Standard variation, identified by its confirmed C-prefix serial number. The steel Standard was the original and most substantial version of the Double Automatic, providing a steady, well-balanced feel that many traditional shotgun enthusiasts prefer. Unlike the later lightweight alloy models, the Standard combines the Double Automatic's compact action with the solidity and handling characteristics of a finely built Belgian field gun. The shotgun is fitted with a measured 25-inch Belgian barrel featuring Browning's distinctive recessed U-channel rib. This unusual factory rib incorporates a deep longitudinal channel through its center, creating a clean sighting plane while reducing unnecessary forward weight. Short U-channel barrels are among the most desirable Double Automatic configurations because they provide noticeably quicker handling than the more commonly encountered long-barreled field guns. The barrel is marked for fixed Full choke and carries the period Browning markings "Browning Arms Company St. Louis, Mo.," "Special Steel 12 Gauge Shells 2 3/4," "Browning Patents" and "Made in Belgium," together with the appropriate Belgian proof, inspection and barrel-weight markings. The steel receiver features finely executed factory scroll engraving, Browning's characteristic border treatment and additional engraved detailing around the trigger guard. The engraving remains sharp and well defined, with none of the soft edges commonly associated with aggressively polished or refinished firearms. The original walnut stock and forearm remain exceptionally attractive, displaying rich color, visible figure and well-defined checkering. No cracks, structural repairs or evidence of refinishing are present. The original Browning Double Automatic portrait buttplate remains installed and displays the classic John M. Browning design. The barrel retains strong, attractive bluing with only limited handling evidence. The receiver, stock and forearm present extremely well for a Belgian sporting shotgun of this age. The bore is impeccable, bright and clean. The action, loading system, trigger, safety and related mechanical components have been inspected and are likewise in impeccable operating condition. The Double Automatic was produced in far smaller numbers than Browning's famous Auto-5 and remains one of the company's most underappreciated designs. Its abbreviated receiver, receiver-fed two-shot system, short-recoil operation and exceptional balance distinguish it from nearly every other semiautomatic shotgun of its era. This is not an average field-worn Double Automatic. Its confirmed C-prefix steel receiver, compact 25-inch U-channel rib barrel, fixed Full choke, crisp factory engraving, excellent original walnut, original portrait buttplate, impeccable bore and outstanding mechanical condition place it well above the ordinary examples commonly encountered on the secondary market. For the Browning collector, this shotgun represents an unusually attractive configuration of one of Val Browning's most ingenious designs. For the sporting shotgun enthusiast, it offers the fast handling, natural balance and craftsmanship for which Belgian Brownings remain highly regarded. No factory box, paperwork or additional accessories are included. All used firearms are sold as is, with no warranties, express or implied.
