Overview

ntroduced in 1955, the Colt Python is a .357 Magnum double-action revolver renowned for its high-quality craftsmanship, smooth trigger pull, and distinctive styling, often referred to as the "Rolls-Royce of Colt revolvers". It quickly became a favorite of law enforcement and collectors before a 2020 reintroduction brought the "snake gun" back into modern production. The Python was developed in the early 1950s as a high-end, heavy-frame .357 Magnum target revolver. It was based on the Colt I-frame, with significant contributions from gunsmiths Al De John and factory superintendent Al Gunther, who added the iconic vent rib for barrel stability.
