(Remington UMC), Ilion, New York Model: Model 16 Caliber: .22 Remington Automatic (proprietary rimfire cartridge) Action: Semi-automatic (autoloading) Design Features: Takedown model with interrupted thread barrel-receiver junction. Tubular magazine housed in the buttstock, loaded via port on underside of stock. Barrel Length: Approximately 22 inches Overall Length: Approximately 38 inches Serial Number: 9911 Production Year: Approximately 1917 (early production example based on serial number sequence) The Remington Model 16 was introduced in 1914/1915 as Remington's first .22 caliber autoloading rifle and was produced until 1928, with total production of approximately 17,720 units. It was designed by C.H. Barnes as a response to Winchester's Model 1903. The proprietary .22 Remington Automatic cartridge was developed specifically for this model to ensure reliable function with smokeless powder only and to prevent issues from black powder ammunition common at the time. The cartridge is not interchangeable with .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle. This rifle features the original markings including "22 REMINGTON AUTOLOADING" and patent dates from 1914.
